In every generation, Allah places among us individuals whose lives quietly yet powerfully remind us what it means to serve with sincerity. Hajja Khayriyyah Hanan Faiz is one such servant-leader—someone whose life stands as a living example that service to people is, at its core, service rendered for the pleasure of God.
Sister Khayriyyah’s journey was shaped early by a deep commitment to faith, education, and community responsibility. Raised in Savannah, Georgia, she demonstrated leadership, compassion, and a natural inclination toward service from a young age. Those qualities continued to grow as she pursued higher education in sociology and social work, preparing herself not simply for a career, but for a life of meaningful contribution.
After embracing Islam in 1972, Sister Khayriyyah devoted decades of her life to uplifting others—particularly the most vulnerable—through education, counseling, advocacy, and community leadership. Her work spanned institutions and generations: from Islamic schools and masjid communities to hospitals, mental health systems, and nonprofit organizations. Everywhere she served, she brought excellence, integrity, and an unwavering sense of responsibility.
As a former President of Sisters United in Human Service, Inc., Sister Khayriyyah helped shape an organization rooted in sisterhood, service, and submission to the Will of Allah. Her leadership reflected the Qur’anic principle of Al Ma’un—the call to care for those in need, not as an afterthought, but as an essential expression of faith. For her, service was not transactional or performative; it was relational, intentional, and deeply human.
Those who knew Sister Khayriyyah often describe her as someone who wanted for others nothing less than what she wanted for herself. She believed in dignity without conditions, compassion without judgment, and accountability paired with mercy. Whether mentoring youth, supporting families, or advocating within systems of care, she carried herself with humility and purpose—always striving to be a better believer, mother, servant, and friend.
It is for these reasons that the K. Faiz Al Ma’un Warm & Cozy Drive proudly bears her name. This initiative is not simply about distributing winter essentials; it is about continuing a legacy of showing up for others with love, care, and excellence. Each care package assembled and each donation offered is a reflection of Sister Khayriyyah’s lifelong commitment to meeting human needs with sincerity and grace.
Volunteering and giving through this effort is an invitation to participate in something greater than ourselves. It is an opportunity to practice faith through action, to teach our children the value of service, and to strengthen the bonds of community that Sister Khayriyyah spent her life nurturing. In a world that often prioritizes self-interest, this work reminds us that true success lies in what we give, not what we keep.
Sister Khayriyyah’s life was a form of dawah—not only through words, but through consistent, compassionate action. Her striving was always directed toward being pleasing to Allah, and her legacy continues to guide us as we serve with intention and humility.
As we honor her name through this initiative, may we recommit ourselves to the sacred work of service. May our hands be active, our hearts sincere, and our efforts accepted. And may the legacy of Sister Khayriyyah Hanan Faiz continue to inspire us to serve humanity with faith, love, and purpose—insha’Allah.
